May 17, 2012 – Mark Hunt has been forced to pull out of his UFC 146 fight against Stefan Struve due to a knee injury, MMA Fighting has learned from sources close to the fight. As a result, Struve will now face Lavar Johnson on less than two week’s notice.

Johnson last fought just 12 days ago at UFC on FOX 3. He knocked out Pat Barry in the first round of their main card fight.

Hunt, a winner in his last three fights, has enjoyed a career renaissance in the UFC, so much so that there was a strong online movement to get him to replace Alistair Overeem against Junior dos Santos in the UFC 146 main event. As fate would have it, neither Overeem or Hunt will end up fighting on the card after all.

Both Struve and Johnson enter the fighting riding two-fight winnings streaks.

UFC 146, headlined by dos Santos vs. Frank Mir, airs live on pay-per-view on May 26.

The price of wine is generally dependant upon three things: the cost of production, the supply and the demand. More expensive wines almost always cost more to make because the they use better ingredients (grapes, barrels, winemakers, etc), because the demand for the wines are higher, and the supply is generally limited. I’ve argued in the past that pronouncements of quality are entirely subjective. But within the world of consensus understandings, we will almost always understand that more expensive wines are appreciated in greater degree than less expensive wines.

Few People Know What They are Talking About When It Comes to Terroir
We talk a lot about “terroir” and the taste of the soil in this business and industry. We all submit that translating the terroir into the bottle is paramount to the process. Yet the fact is, 99.9% of folks who talk about this sort of thing could not pick a Russian River Valley Pinot out of a line up that also included a Santa Barbara, New Zealand, and Carneros Pinot. And let’s not even talk about trying to identify a Pinot from one vineyard and a Pinot from another vineyard a mile down the road. The implications of this uncomfortable truth are many, not the least of which is the role that faith plays in the area of wine appreciation.

Natural Wine Isn’t Natural
Lots of talk of “natural” wine these days. More producers, retailers, wine bars and events are dedicated to the stuff. But “natural” is to wine as California Sparkling wine is to Champagne. It isn’t that. “Natural” wine is processed grape juice and the processing and manipulation begins in the vineyard and ends with the marketing.

Ratings Sell LOTS of Wine
Despite the constant din of criticism of ratings and the 100 Point rating system in particular, ratings sell big time. And the 100 Point rating system is a huge driver of sales. If you don’t think so, talk to the winemaker that just got their first 95 point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate or the Wine Spectator. Then ask them, would you rather have a string of tweets about your great wine or a 95 point rating from Robert Parker.

Once such vehicle is the Leon Super Copa Рa model inspired by its sibling racer from the WTCC and priced at 63,000 euro, or about $80,000 at the current exchange rates.

The new Leon Super Copa is powered by an uprated version of the 2.0-liter TSI engine from the Leon Cupra R. The engine delivers a total of 300 HP and a peak torque of 250 lbs-ft, sprinting the car up to a top speed of 155 mph. The engine’s output travels through a six-speed DSG transmission and mechanically locking differential to the front wheels.

The Seat Leon Super Copa features a special grey paint finish, while the mirror casings, wheels, and roll cage highlight the vehicle in a fluorescent orange.

Chef/owner of Takashi (1952 N. Damen Ave., 773-772-6170), Takashi Yagihashi, has family in Japan. “Fortunately, my mother and sister are fine,” he said. “But many people need help.”

So he put little notes in his check presenters, asking customers to consider leaving a donation for the victims of the Japan earthquake. Nothing much, just $5.

“If people don’t (give), I won’t be hurt,” Yagihashi said. “But I thought I’d ask.”

A lot of people left $5. Quite a few left considerably more, and Yagihashi figured more people, more help. So late last week he reached out to about 80 of his fellow chefs, asking if they’d put little notes in their check presenters. He’s not keeping track of which restaurants will participate.

All the money is going straight to the Red Cross in Japan.

So if you see a little note in your presenter this week consider putting that extra fiver to good use.

May 15, 2012 – Vinny Magalhaes is done fighting for M-1 Global, but he apparently still managed to use the company to make a hefty payday.

The man still recognized by M-1 as light heavyweight champion put his title belt for sale on EBay. As of Tuesday morning, the page was gone, as Magalhaes announced over Twitter he had sold the gold for $100,000.

On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Magalhaes, who is waiting out a period in which M-1 can match contract offers from other promotions after a bitter parting of the ways, explained his motivations for putting the belt up for sale.

“Somehow I cannot fight until September or so, so I may as well just keep myself relevant by making news,” he told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani.

Most fans remember Magalhaes for his stint on the “The Ultimate Fighter 6,” where he lost to Ryan Bader in the season finale card. Since then, Magalhaes, a Rio de Janeiro native and ADCC gold medalist, has gone 7-1. That includes all five of his victories in M-1, where he hooked on in 2010, with all of his wins coming via stoppage.

The marriage between fighter and promotion came went south when a public war of words ensued between Magalhaes and M-1 representative Evgeni Kogan. Magalhaes claimed Kogan was openly rooting for his opponent during Magalhaes’ last M-1 fight.

“I’ve never had a problem with M-1 as a company,” he said. “They always paid me for the fights they were supposed to. My only problem is with Evgeni Kogan, which was a personal problem. He was at in my last fight, he decided to root against me, and since that day things haven’t gone well.”

Magalhaes doesn’t regret making his complaints with Kogan public.

“I mean, when he rooted against me he didn’t do it behind the scenes,” Magalhaes said. “He made it public … He said I was an unemployed gigolo fighter, what does that even mean, is he calling me a prostitute?”

His contract expired at the end of December, but not without several hitches.

“I have no obligations to fight for them.” he said. “I had a contract to fight for them through January. They had a show in November, they didn’t use me, they had a show in December, they didn’t use me, and in January my contract expired.”

Because Magalhaes held the belt, though, the company had a 60-day window in which they could exclusively negotiate with Magalhaes, followed by a 120-period in which they could match any offer from another promotion.

This means he won’t be free to deal with other promoters without M-1′s interference until July. But that’s OK with him.

“I’ve just decided not to talk to anyone for 120 days,” he said. “So if there’s no one to talk to, there’s no offer, and if there’s no offer, there’s nothing [for M-1] to match. Sometime in July I can walk away and sign with whoever I want.”

In the interim, the Xtreme Couture fighter is keeping busy by helping train Chael Sonnen for his July rematch with Anderson Silva. Magalhaes confirmed to The MMA Hour that he has received death threats from fellow Brazilians for working with Sonnen, who has made no secret about his thoughts for the country.

“It might just be some kid trying to be the tough guy on the Internet,” said Magalhaes. “But nothing you think it actually might happen.”

It would seem inevitable for Magalhaes to return to the UFC. He welcomes the notion, and he says he would like another chance to fight Bader, who TKOd him in their bout. He makes it clear, though, that he’s not specifically trying to troll Bader for a rematch.

“I fought Ryan Bader, that’s the only fight anyone remembers,” he said. “Everyone says I got a glass jaw, I got dropped, but in reality, that’s the only fight that I ever lost by TKO, that’s the only fight ever. TUF finals, I’ve never been dropped or KOd oterh than that fight. Everyone says I have a glass jaw because of that fight, but that’s the only one. I want to give payback to Bader because he’s the one who forced me into that situation.”

“I won’t walk into UFC and call out Bader. He’s a top-six fighter right now. You don’t want to walk into a promotion and start calling out people. But if I get two or three wins, maybe I can get a fight with him.”

Magalhaes, of course, know the perils of Ebay, so it remains to be seen whether the high bidder will actually follow through.

“I don’t know if these bidders are for real, if they’re going to really spend $14,000 [the high bid at the time of the interview] on a belt that isn’t worth not even a dollar, so it’s up to them to pay that much. Maybe they’re looking to pay that much because it’s my belt not because its an M-1 belt.”

May 14, 2012 – James Wilks, a British welterweight who won season nine of the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter just three years ago, has elected to retire after seeing his career set back by a slew of injuries.

The 34-year-old made the announcement on Twitter over the weekend.

Wilks, who is from Leicestershire, England, represented his home country in a 2009 season with international flavor, dubbed TUF: United States vs. United Kingdom.

During the competition, he beat recent UFC 145 co-main event fighter Che Mills, Frank Lester twice and then tapped out DeMarques Johnson with a rear naked choke in the final to win the trophy.

Memorably during the season, Johnson offered Lester money to knock out Wilks’ teeth, and as it turned out, Wilks knocked out four of Lester’s teeth with a knee from the clinch.

He went 2-2 in four official trips in the octagon. Aside from his victory over Johnson — the final is the only TUF bout to be sanctioned as an “official” fight — he won a UFC 115 bout against Peter Sobotta, but lost matches against Matt Brown and Claude Patrick.

Wilks’ last time in the cage was well over one year ago, when he fell to Patrick at UFC 120 in October 2010.

He was supposed to fight against Amir Sadollah last March but was forced out due to a serious knee injury.

Wilks retires with a 7-4 career record.

He has said he will spend his future concentrating on his gym, Lightning MMA in Laguna Hills, California.
